Visitation will be limited to immediate family for now. It seems the over stimulation might be having adverse effects on Al.
As he is back in the Trauma unit, they will be doing a trachiotomy because he is having difficulty with the brathing again, and needs to be on the ventilator assist. They will be also inserting a feeding tube plug, to insure that he is getting the proper nutrition. Additional tests are scheduled for today, including an EKG to see what is going on in Al's head (something we have always been curious about). These all appear as setbacks, but we all need to take heart as God is in control.
We only see the picture before us, and as 'dim' as it might seem, we do not have the eyes of God. His plan is much bigger and He controls the unseen. As i have said many times before, the waiting is the hardest.

Three Steps Forward, Two Steps Back
Chuck Swindoll's book by this title is exactly how life is for us. I remember reading this book when it was first released, back in the 80's and it is true for us today as well.
Last night Al got moved back to the trauma unit and back on the breathing tube. I am not sure of all the details of what is going on but they said he will be in the ICU and will be sedated because of the situation. This will allow the staff to give him more direct care. Two days ago He was really looking around and trying to get up with Kristen, but yesterday did nothing. They will be running a series of tests and will find out what is going on.
This raises a concern, but we were told from the beginning that this could be a roller coaster ride. Al is now in room J214, and we are limiting visitation to immediate family. Kristen will be discussing with the doctors today the impact of this, and what the best steps moving forward should be.
God is amazing, and in control. Coninue in Prayer........................

New Photos Posted
Just found a few photos of Al and I in Johnstown, thought it would be good to share them (see the right column). These wwere pretty good, because everyone 'saw' Al when he rode down the street in his 'top hat' It was a great time just riding behind him and watching the reactions of everyone.
Sitting Up and the "Steel Force"
This morning i visited with Al, who was in and out of sleep while I was there. They told me they had him sitting up on the side of the bed. Now that is amazing. He has three other 'roomies' and I am sure the others do not know what is in store for them. This will offer yet another opportunity to show that not all bikers are 'bad dudes' but we can extend care and compassion as 'regular guys.'
As I sat with him and read the Psalms to him, I gazed out the window and saw the top of the Steel Force roller coaster at Dorney Park, and remembered that Kristen had mentioned it. I thought of the 'steel horses' we ride and how, unlike riding the roller coaster, there are no rails to guide us. It is sort of like life itself, with no rails to guide us. However there is an instruction book to help us in the journey of life. The Bible. When you think of how the Bible came about, and has lasted centuries through many 'twists and turns' along the way, it still stands as the number one seller of ALL time. In order for us to ride our steel horses, there was an instruction book, both for riding and for the equipment. We read, applied the principles, and moved forward. Just like life. The Bible - Life's Instruction Book.

Getting Up?
Today, after Al was in his new room, a lady next to him was in pain and vocal about it. At one point Al attempted to sit up in order to get out of bed to help her. Al is looking good with his new hair dew, or lack of hair, and all clean shaven. I wonder how long it will be until he wants his beard back? As far as the swallowing test, it went better this time than the last, and there will be another one tomorrow.

Moving on Up !
Last night during my visit with Al, the nurses came in and told Kristen that a bed is opening up in the Transitional Trauma Unit, and they would be moving him ! This is good news, as he is now pretty much operating on his own with a few 'wires and tubes' but nothing unusal for anyone in the hospital. He was finally settled in around 10:30 last night. It was truly a busy day for him.
The Transitional trauma Unit is located in the main building (from the main entrance go straight ahead to the Elevators) on the fifth floor, room TT06, Bed A. He is in a dorm type room with three other beds. The hours for visitation are from 11am to 8pm. You MUST sign in at the front desk and get a Visitor's Pass prior to going upstairs.
Our visit last night included Al smiling at Deb when she walked in and said hello, as well as several joking matters with him. When we heard the news about being moved, I commented that "maybe there would be some good looking nurses there." Kristen came back with "Maybe you could get a hot date." A large smirk and frown came over his face and Kristen laughed hysterically. The look was as if Al was saying "you got to be kidding!"
The Prayer Vigil is filling up. We also are leaving a Bible in the room, where we are encouraging everyone to read one of the Psalms to Al while you are there. Thanks to Deb for this, as well as many other ideas. She completes me, keeping me in line.
Al's recovery to this point is physically impossible to comprehend. The speed of progress is baffling the nurses and attendants. We know how powerful God is. He is in control. His will is foremost. Most of the time we forget these things. We try to be in control, then get frustated when things don't work out. When we let God be in control, amazing things happen. This is an amazing journey in which we are all participating. Watching God work is amazing. How He uses circumstances and people in our lives is amazing.
It is my priveledge to be just a small part of sharing this journey with all of you, the readers of this blog. I trust you are benefiting from the read.

336 Hours Later
Today we saw the staples removed and Al was fitted for a helmet, which will be in tomorrow. Life throws us may ironies, and this is one. He had some issues with the swallowing test today, and they will repeat it tomorrow. Pray that he will be able to swallow, so there will not be a need for a feeding tube.
There is so much you and I take for granted. Itruly believe in God's healing power. A healing of total restoration, that is my prayer. Will you join with me?

Prayer Warriors Needed
As Al is recuperating, we need to continue to keep him in prayer. If you can pray for Al 15 minutes a day, let me know the time slot during the day you can pray. Email me at M2Architek@hotmail.com. I will only post your first name. We will continue this through the Benefit on September 26th. You can check the posting on the right side of the Blog under "Special Sites"
Friday is coming!
Friday night July 31st Kingdom Roadhouse will be back in the swing of things. The service will begin at 7pm. For those that want to help with the Benefit on September 26th, we will be having an organizational meeting immediately after the service. This should only take a short time, as the first step. The most important item is to get a flyer created and distributed, as there are many events where we can distribute them, begining with Lehighton Bike Night on August the 8th. There are many areas where you can help, so come and volunteer.
Sunday Afternoon
After a long ride back from West Virginia, Deb and I went in to visti with Al. To our suprise most of the equipment has been removed. Al is totally brathing on his own, without any additional oxygen. He was sort of awake, the TV was on, and he appeared to be watching a National gepgraphic show about bears. He is still sedated. He did respond to us when we talked to him, however, he did not seem to know who we were. The nurse said that there usually is temporary amnesia with head trauma, and/or it could be the meds. As we were standing there, he fell asleep so I can only think it was the meds.

Friday Night’s Visitor
Last night Al was awake, restless/agitated when the visitor came to see him. “Do you know who I am?" she asked. He nodded his head "yes" and smiled. When his nurse came in she said "Al, do you know this lady?" Again, he gave a BIG nod and smiled. The nurse’s reaction was "I've never seen him respond so strongly! This is great!" She said the amount of progress Al has made in such a short span of time is nothing short of a miracle.
On to the medical stuff... pressure remains stable, based on his clinical signs (what they are able to observe of his condition); CT scans are routinely being done to verify no negative changes before clinically apparent (if there is a significant downward change, he will immediately have another CT scan, with appropriate action taken); the MRI showed no further fractures; his cervical spine is intact... a miracle in itself; he does NOT have a tracheostomy... nurse said they were ready to do the procedure today... the tools remain in his room, ready should they be needed... team decided to give him another day on minimum assist on the ventilator... the plan is to extubate him tomorrow... if he is able to breathe on his own, he'll do just that... if he is not able, that is when he will be trached... in terms of the pneumonia, his temp spikes, breaks, spikes, breaks... pneumonia in patients in Al's circumstance is a common occurrence and they are fighting it aggressively... Al does have a feeding tube... the nutrition he is receiving is a mixed blessing... his glucose levels (elevated partially due to the nutrition he is receiving) are causing him to need 18 or more units of insulin per hour... this is quite a high dosage.... hopefully, as his condition becomes more stable, so will his glucose levels... one day at a time...
The visitor left encouraged. Encouraged by his progress, by his will to live, by his smiles, nods, hand squeezes... but most of all, by a GOD, our GOD, who is using our friend as a living testimony to HIS sovereignty. The staff again tonight said how encouraged THEY are by the amazing, MIRACULOUS progress Al has made and continues to make. Our God is an AWESOME God!!!

Praying across America
Al's condition remains constant, and the waiting continues: the hardest part. We are continually reminded that we are not in control...it is not our timing.....everything is in od's control.
Deb and I are at the CMA National East Rally in Lewisburg WV. As today's morning session began, John Ogden, the Chairman of the Board of CMA prayed for Al. For the entire event, there will be people praying for the event and Al is included in the prayer list. The prayer circle now extends to people from Texas, Florida, Iowa and Boston.......God's people are praying!
One of the seminars we went to was about witnessing at a secular rally. I thought about Al continuously, because that is exactly where he has been called to be. Everything that was discussed were things that Al and I have talked about with the ministry of Kingdom Roadhouse. Reaching the people that others will not.

Nine Days In
Not too much different has happened in the last two days. Al's temperature remains around 100-101. They will be putting in a trachiotomy tomorrow and a 'plug' into his stomach for a feeding tube. There will be an MRI tomorrow, which will be to see if there is any nerve damage in his left arm, as he hasn't been moving it.
I wish I had more of an update, but that is all for now....

One Week
Yesterday's post prayed for nothing else to take a turn. Things have turned slightly. Al has developed a fever of 101 which has been at this point for 24 hours. They also began giving him anitbiotics to treat for pneumonia. This became a concern due to the caughing up (no clear) and with the inactivity (no motion), this is always a concern.
Al is also very restless. I think he is just agiated to be laying for so long. Kristen wants to again limit the visitation in order to keep him calm. This is what the nurses have said. They moved the main line to the other side today, and continue to keep him sedated.
As was mentioned earlier, things can change either way, any day. So, we continue to pray.
As I will be traveling for a week, this blog will be updated just oonce a day, unless time allows me more opportunity to update.

Sunday and Sermons
Life has become a sermon. Think about it, with all that has happened, there are many lessons we are all learning through this trial. Waiting. Patience. Waiting. Uncertainty. Waiting. As I mentioned earlier, waiting is the hardest. Sermons teach us about trials, overcoming trials and life applications. The past week has been an intense lesson in these things
Today we have been informed there is a concern over pneumonia. They have been working on his lungs, but he is 'caughin' up, and it isn not clear, so the concern is pneumonia. A new concern to keep in prayer. And pray for the absence of new concerns. Al doesn't need anything else to be added on.
With Al, everything is in constant motion, so to speak. Oh so typical for him. Al never has 'let the grass grow beneath him.' Why should we expect anything different now? He is very responsive to the nurses. He is very responsive to visitors that come in to see and pray with him. I was told of a tear that welled up in his right eye yesterday during a visit. Al is being touched by our love for him, but especially touch by God's love.
2 Timothy 4:2 says to be prepared, in season and out of season, to preach the Word. And in verse 5 it concludes with..."do the work of an evangelist." I used this verse in Church this morning as I began an update of Al. This is how Al began every day, including last Monday. Al's life is preaching a sermon to us right now. His life is saying "remain faithful" and I am sure he would want this time to be used for God's glory. Fridays prayer service ended with the song "Lifesong" by Casting Crowns. The words say, "Let your Lifesong sing for Me, I want sign Your name at the end of each day, so let your Lifesong sing..." I encourage everyone to "let your Lifesong Sing!" Be ready, in season and out of season. You never know how God will choose to use you. This is what Al would want.

Uncomfortable
That word is how I would describe Al today. He is moving around quite a bit, and I can only imagine that he is trying to find a comfortable position. That's right, legs and feet moving, trying to re-position himself. Although still sedated, he looked into my eyes, respnding with a blink when I asked him to. I also learned that his left clavical bone was fractured. This explains why his left arm movements are limited. His right hand is constantly moving, reaching for his head. I told him his hand was restrained so he doesn't pull at all the tubes and wires. Today they are starting to wean him off the breathing assist and gradually he will be on his own.
The day nurse today explained everthing to me as she monitored and worked, taking care of him. With authority, she told him, "Give me a thumbs up!" His immediate response was a hearty right handed thumbs up!
I explained to Al that kingdom Roadhouse was packed, and that he is a man truly loved by others. Al always "payed it forward" sharing his love with others, now being returned ten-fold. As he looked at me, I made purposeful moves, to which he followed me. I can just iimagine him saying, "will you just stand still?? You are giving me a headache!" Still unable to speak because of the tubes in his throat, we can only imagine what his brain is saying. He may be thinking, "bring me a steak, I a really tired of this tube feeding." Or, perhaps, "why are you all talking so loud and slow?" All of us who know Al........well you can put your own quote right here.

Saturday and the Telephone
I spoke to "Knuckles" on the telephone today who told me that when he last saw Al, he just"wants to be used by God in any way He chooses." This accident has brough so many together, people that have never met before, and those that haven't spoken for years. When, in our own selfishness we ask 'why?" we can look to the mending and unifying of other lives that Al has touched.
Al's close co-worker called me. This man shared the story of the accident from his eyes. It is a scary thing, to re-live a tragedy that puts you at a ring-side seat. He was right behind Al. He yelled as the scene unfolded in front of him. He held Al in his arms, attempting to restrain him as he wanted to get up. He took some of Al's blood home with him on his clothes. This man is still shaken by this event. We need to remember him in our prayers as well. We pray for his comfort as this event runs over and over in his mind. Being there for Al, at this important time of need, was all in God's plan.

Prayers and Friends
Al's dream for Kingdom Roadhouse is to have a full house. Last night, as Al lay in the hospital, that dream was fulfilled. Friends, neighbors, relatives and co-workers filled the sanctuary, sharing prayers and stories of a man with a heart as big as Texas. A nervous Kristen stood beside me and shared the latest news abut her father. She never thought an exciting event would be Dad wiggling his toes. They removed him from the coma inducing medecine and he is fiollowing commands. Dr. Jon Bortz shared how Al's improvement is well beyond where anyone in the hospital would ahve expected. Gods' love is evident to doctors and nurses, and all attending him, through everyone that visits.
One of the largest impressions I got, looking over the attendees, was how many fellow riders have had incidents while riding. Most everyone there, that were riders, have had an encounter with either another vehicle, or the ground, while riding. Some shared those stories. Some shared of God's protection. We never know, when we leave the driveway, exactly what the road ahead has in store for us. We need to maintain a high sensitivity, and take nothing for granted when we place our hands on the handgrips. Havng been down several times myself, my memory always returns th=o the event just 200 yards from my home one Friday night. Rounding a turn two up, my kickstand was down. Realizing that I wasn't going to make the turn, a bailout was my only option against hitting the telephone pole. As others said last night, I made the same statement, "This is going to hurt."
So, as I locked the door last night behind me, a part of me went to look for Al, who wasn't there. Several of us went for a meal at Perkins afterward, leaving an empty chair for Al. We laughed, knowing that Al was right there with us in spirit, and always there to share a meal.

The Motorcycle
Today I will go pick up Al's bike. I have been informaed by the towing company that it is probably ridable, but I am taking my trailer nonetheless. I dont know how I would feel with my hands on the "ape hangers" anyway.
This makes me think back on past times when I have gone down, as well as when other friends have. The aftermath of the experience, the condition of the bike, re-living the actual event, and the tasks necessary to put things back together, makes me personally, as a rider, to pause and evaluate when I ride. I rode on Wednesday this week, taking Tuesday off from the bike for obvious reasons. During Wednesday, I was even more keenly aware of my surroundings and the need to watch every move of the motorists around me.
So, after this bit of a rambling, I will go this afternoon to pay the towing company the "Storage Bail Money" and bring Al's bike to my house. I think the towing companies should describe it as a "Vehicle Jail" as a much better description. The insurance company will need to come and look it over and we will see from there.

Benefit Ride and Concert - September 26th
Here I go again. That is my thoughts as the plans are coming together for a benefit event. The date and place have been set. September 26, 2009 at the Schnecksville Fire Company.
We will begin the day with a motorcycle ride and end with a concert and food event. The details are still in the works, but block out the day to attend!
Now, here is the thing: Volunteers will be needed, both in the next few weeks and the day of the event. You can E-mail me or telephone me to volunteer. I am sure we will be organizing a meeting in the near future to lay out the plans and delegate some of the responsibilities.
I will be asking several bands that have played at Kingdom Roadhouse to donate their time for a 45 minute set. Marty Benecoff will be running the sound, and he makes everyone sound great! So, stay tuned for more information soon to come on this topic!

Praises, Angels and Comments
Praises:
It may not seem to be the most exciting news, but for these circumstances wiggling your toes is a great praise. Today, when woken, Al was asked to wiggle his toes, and...HE DID! Such a Praise! Today after another slight bout with increased brain pressure, it again subsided and stabilzed. The awsome power of prayer in action! Be sure to keep praying so that God will be glorified!
Angels:
An email received today - I am a friend and fellow coworker of Al's at KidsPeace and just wanted to let you know ther are many many people here concerned about and praying for Al and his daughter. Please take comfort in knowing that Al was immediately surrounded by friends at the accident scene that cared for and held him in their arms until help arrived, he was not alone in his time of need. I also wanted to let you know about a guardian angel yhat was sent to Al in the form of a passing motorist who stopped to help. She was a trained EMT and took control of the scene and did everything properly and quickly to help Al. After Al was in the ambulance she disappeared as quickly as she came.
Comments:
I trust that this time has brought a pause to each of us, to value the friendships we have around us. Knowing the Lord, and His power in our lives and circumstances - the evidences we see of His love all around us- will press us toward sharing that Love with those closest to us. Our fraility, no matter how tough we think we are, is ever before us, reminding us of Who is ultimately in control. I know that the reading of the posted comments here, the emails, and phone calls, have reminded me of these things, and I pray they do the same for you.

Machines, Electronics, Wires and Tubes
Al as a totally horizontal man: This normally would be Al, laying on the ground working under his bike looking for answers and making repairs. There would be grumblings, talking to himself, perhaps the tossing of a wrench and screwdriver. Not in this case. Al lays there, motionless except for the breathing. It is hard to imagine him this way.
I see more diagnostic equipment, monitoring more things, than I could have imagined. One would expect a heart monitor. One would expect a respiratory monitor. There is a sensor monitoring the pressure in the head. There are pulsating pressure wraps on his legs to prevent blood clots. He has a respiratory assist. There are tubes draining. Most of the equipment I certainly do not understand, but I am thankful the doctors and medical staff do. The advances in medical procedures and technology are amazing.
Yesterday the brain pressure went up unexpectedly, then subsided. Al’s breathing appears normal. The routine continues to wake him every two hours to check his reactions. I expect that at any moment, he would sit up and ask for a crazy t-shirt. God is in control and all is in His timing. The waiting is the hardest.

Through the Night
Kristen stayed at the hospital most of last night. The nurses set up a room where she could stay, be close to dad, and be available when the nurses worked on Al. During one of the times they woke Al, he opened his eyes, looked at Kristen, and seemed to understand what she was saying. This is more good news. There will be another CAT scan today. All of this good news comes with a bit of a pause, as we do not know a lot of things yet as it is much too early. We do know, however, that God is in control. We are not. Our faith and trust in Him remains steadfast as sovereign.
If you have a copy of “Grace for the Moment” by Max Lucado, today’s devotional (July 15) “More than Meets the Eye” is appropriate. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith means being sure of the things we hope for and knowing something is real even if we do not see it.”

When your hut is on fire...
The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions. One day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the worst had happened, and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief, and anger. He cried out, 'God! How could you do this to me?' Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island! It had come to rescue him! 'How did you know I was here?' asked the weary man of his rescuers. 'We saw your smoke signal,' they replied.
The Moral of This Story:
It's easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground. It just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God.

Thirty Hours Later
Last night as I visited with Al and his daughter, so many things raced through my mind. All uncertainties making everyone all the more anxious over the situation. The unknown and waiting are the most difficult challenges. Several immediate concerns are in the forefront:
The accident report:
We still have no report from the State Police. Kristen called them, only to get a returned call nine hours later that she called the wrong station. Al's bike is at the towing company, and they will not release it because the State Police have not been there yet. The insurance company has not been there yet either. Each day that passes will incur unnecessary expenses for 'storage' fees. Today there will be more telephone calls in an attempt to resolve this portion.
Health Insurance:
The details of the health insurance need to be understood. It is necessary to understand the impact of decisions concerning Al's care.
Financial:
Information from Al's employer, Kid's Peace, needs to be obtained to determine what income, if any, will be available. How will this money be accessed? How can we get Kristin to have a power of Attorney and/or a court order for this? Should there be a special fund account set up to deal with the immediate expenses? What about FMLA? Does Al have short term disability insurance?
The Apartment and stuff:
What should happen with Al's apartment and all his stuff? How long will he be in the hospital? What about the rent, utilities and other bills? Will Al be able to be on a second floor? All concerns and unanswered questions.

What about this guy we know as Al ?
Al is a tough cookie. When I use that term, you need to understand something. I have watched Al over the years interacting with kids of all ages, and they love him. He brings the children's messages on Sunday mornings. As 'scary' as he might seem at first, the kids flock to him like the pied piper as he shares the gospel messages with them at their own level.
I have also seen him angry. He is just like you and me, and he does get upset from time to time. I watched his reaction when his bike was hit in my driveway after a Bible study at my home. I know Al well enough, that when he is quiet, he is upset. But, as a true follower of Christ, he also doesnt let his anger get the best of him.
Why do I say these things? Because Al is a fighter, and that is what he is doing right now. And we need to fight for him with our prayers. We need to be interceding for him constantly every minute and every hour, fo as long as it takes. Right now Satan is waring against him, and we must defeat the deceiver.
I know Al would be right there in the trenches for so many of us, if we were the one laying there in the hospital, so we must reciprocate for him. I agree with his daughter when she said last night, "I have never seen him so vulnerabe."

The Media
two newspapers have been in contact with me. The Parkland Press called me this morning as they are on the Kingdom Roadhouse email list. They will be publishing something this week. The Morning Call also called me and are placing information in the newspaper about the Prayer meeting Friday night. Both newspapers will also be posting the blog address. It is in times like these that we can see how God is working.
This afternoon
According to the nurses, Al is doing well. He is in a medically induced coma and they wake him every two hours. When he is awake, he is following the commands well, which is a great sign. The visitation is limited right now to family, so that he doesnt become overwhelmed and there is also alot of equipment in the room. Once his recovery progresses to the the point of allowing visitors, I will post a notification here.
This Morning
Pastor Al had a good night and was stable through the night. A CAT scan was performed this morning and everything looked good. They ran a test to check his reflexes and he resonded with both arms, which is a great praise report. Further details will become available once the police report is completed, but things remain sketchy at this time.
thanks for your continued prayers

Pastor Al's Accident
Al Barnes, Pastor of Kingdom Roadhouse Biker Church was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident on July 13 around 4pm. The Accident occurred while he was on his way home from working at Kid’s Peace. He was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest where he underwent surgery.
Al has significant swelling on the right side of his brain and a blood clot on the left side. He has a contusion on the front and a subarachnoid hematoma. There was bleeding that they were able to stop. The surgeon removed a fair size piece of his skull due to the swelling. They did not find any injury to his spinal chord. Not sure about any other injuries at this time. They wanted to treat the most serious injuries first.
God has been at work in this circumstance. The trauma nurse who worked on Al is the niece of a good friend. Another friend is a nurse that was on duty last night. Prayer chains have extended all over the east coast through many, many people.
Please remember Al, and his daughter in prayer. There is no prognosis given by the doctors at this point, as in this type of injury, many differing outcomes are possible. As you can imagine the next few days are important.
There will be a special Prayer Service at Kingdom Roadhouse Friday night July 17th at 7pm. Kingdom Roadhouse meets at 1665 Whitehall Avenue, Allentown PA. Directions are available on the KR website: www.kingdom-roadhouse.org
Please join us for this very important time.
