He may be just around the corner, you never know! Al has been 'out and about' for a couple of weeks now, and you never know where he may be. Keep any eye out for him. He has been spotted at Gregory's, one of his favorite restaurants. He was also wandering around at the 'Wheels of Time' car show in Macungie (that one wore him out a bit). last weekend he was spotted in Orwigsburg. Yes, ORWIGSBURG, at the Salem Block Party.
Just be sure to go up to him and say HI! He will tell you of the awesome God we serve, and His miraculous power. There is no doubt in his mind of WHO is on first in his life.
It is less than two months since the accident, and Al is back to his usual self! AMAZING, when his prognosis the night of the accident, after the surgery was "NO PROGNOSIS." God is always faithful.

Progress
This is Tuesday, the first day of September. Just seven weeks ago, the content of this blog was quite different. The reason it is different now, is because of the prayers of so many people. Prayer has been a poweful weapon, and an effective one. After spending Friday night, Saturday and Sunday with Al, I can tell you that he is a walking miracle.
Friday night he spoke for five minutes, well...more like 15 minutes. It was amazing. He spoke about the prayers. He spoke about what God has in store for him. God is not finished with Al yet, nor is He finished with any of us. God has used each of us through this accident, and He continues to use Al the most. His walking testimony to God's miraculous power is a witness to all that see him.
Saturday, Al and I took care of some paperwork for Kingdom Roadhouse and I took him to my house to look at his bike. My plan was to load the bike on the trailer, and take it to a shop for an estimate. After we examined the bike, Al started rattling off what he paid for several of the damaged items. The mirros were only this much, and the crash bar is this much.... After a quick tally (in his head) he said it wasn't worth making an insurance claim, as we both agreed the amount would be less than his $1000.00 deductible. We ran a few more errands and went to get something to eat (by the way- Al has said no more 'all you can eat'!). later on, Al called to tell me the toatl of the parts was more like $800.00, and that he already ordered some of the parts. When they come in, we will work on the bike together.
Sunday, Al came to Solid Rock, and shared some words with the congregation there. He spoke for only five minutes. Everyone was happy to see him, remarking how 'unbelievable' this recovery has been. That afternoon, I took Al to the Wheels of Time exhibit in Macungie. Now, this was a bit of a challenge. After spending six weeks in a hopsital room, most of the time in a bed, the walking tired him out. We took our time meandering amongst the 'street rods' commenting on many of them to each other. It was necessary to stop and sit occasionally (and the exhibitors offered their chairs). It tired him out.
Today is Al's first day to "go to therapy." Transportation has been provided today. He will need others to step up for other days. I would suggest you reach out directly to Al, and offer your help. You can call him directly at 610-217-0678. Let's continue to offer our assistance and love. Continue to pray, especially for his voice as it doesn't last as long as it used to.
All this is amazing, when we were uncertain of any recovery at all. You see, when we are faithful to that which God has called us to, even the devil cannot stop it. Let me say that again, "God's plan is greater than any other!" Al followed that calling and plan for his life. Al was obedient to what the Father has placed before him. God isn't finished with Al yet.

TODAY IS THE DAY
This is a day we have been praying for. A day that was not expected to come so soon. Today Pastor Al goes home! We have seen the power of prayer in action, and there is no denying God's intervention and healing for Al. All the prayers have been much appreciated by everyone.
Now comes the adjustment for everyone. Al is used to being independent. We need to assist him in whatever way possible. The good news is that he will only need people to check in on him a couple of times a day. When I visited with him on Tuesday, he was wearing his typical garb; jean, t-shirt, and boots! He looked normal. (well as normal as Al ever looked??) He continues to joke around saying, "If I am not the strangest person in the room, something is wrong." This is Al.
When he is released today (by the Warden, as I put it) Kristen is taking him for a treat. A steak dinner! This is a far cry from the food he was eating a few weeks ago, remebre the "I think this used to be potato salad." He is exceeding everyones' expectations, and is truly a walking miracle.

The Journey Isn't Over
This is just a turning of the page, into another chapter, not the end of the book. Let's not forget that. With Al coming home, the next chapter begins. Now, he has come a long way, however, now is the time he needs all of us more than ever.
While visiting with him last night, he was talking about coming home. I told him, "well you know Al, there will be rules." He wrinkled up his face and said, "well I guess that is the biker in me, no liking rules." He seems to be good about wearing his helmet, but I have afeeling he will still need to be reminded of the boundries. The boundries are for his benefit, and we need to remember that when we spend time with him.
His spirits are very high right now, and is back to joking around. Last night he explained that the piece of his skull that was removed is in a freezer. So, when they put it back in, he would really have "brain freeze." There is the Al we all remember. He also wants to make sure the piece gets put back in time so he can heal and ride next year. Yes, he does want to ride again! I would have expected nothing less from him.
For the record, I asked him what he remebers about the accident. He remembers nothin about what happened. We need to understand this is a common thing. I beleive it is our body's way of protecting us from "re-living" the accident. It is a good thing.
I gave Al the notes from my Friday night sermon at Kingdom Roadhouse. He read the first two lines and laughed. His recovery has amazed so many. This is a very uncommon timeline for this type of head injury. Usually, it could be months, and even years before events we would see this kind of progress. This is an absolute testimony to God's miraculous healing power.

Al is Coming Back to KR!
While visiting with Al, he indicated that he will be coming home on Thursday, and wants to speak on Friday at Kingdom Roadhouse. Yes, thats right, Al will be speaking next Friday at Kingdom Roadhouse (August 28th). His message will be a short one due to still having a bit of difficulty talking, but he WILL be there!
This will be a time for rejoicing. Rejoicing for what God has done! Come out and show your support for Pastor Al, as I am sure he will appreciate it.

Another Move Coming
God is amazing! The latest report is that Al should be leaving Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital next Wednesday or Thursday (August 26, 27). At this time, it looks like Al will be released to go home. That’s right, he will be going home. This transition was mentioned in a previous post, but was confirmed today with Kristen, correlating her discussions with Good Shepherd.
Kristen is working with Liberty Resources, the entity that will be providing home nursing care. If approved, Al will be eligible for full time, 24 hour home care. If full time care is not approved, the nursing staff will only be “checking in” on Al, which will need to be determined.
Also, Kristen will be starting her Fall college schedule on August 31st, which her schedule will be verified in the next few days. In light of the dates for Al to come home, this will give Kristen some time to help in the adjustment at home. However, her work schedule will place her out of the home Saturdays and Sundays from approximately 5/6am until 2pm.
All of this goes to requesting volunteers to spend some time with Al, so he is not alone. I am asking that you email me with days and times that you could volunteer. This is yet another hard part. I know that everyone is busy, and have other obligations, but this is how you can help now. It is important that commitments made are kept. Please, please e-mail at m2architek@hotmail.com, I will be creating anopther blog page, similar to the Prayer Vigil page (which also needs additional participants!).
There will be no special requirements when you spend time with Al. We will develop a list of items, which will include do’s and do not’s, as far as thing he will be able to do. We will also have a list of contacts, activities and others willing to assist when necessary.
“Four Habits Worth Having”: 1) Habit of Prayer, 2) Habit of Study, 3) Habit of Giving, 4) Habit of Fellowship. These were items of a devotional from the book, “When God Whispers Your Name.” As far as the first item goes, the habit of prayer has become evident through this journey. The second item is something that each individual needs to be self-accountable to. Read 2 Peter 3:18 to understand our personal growth.
Item 3 is one that is forthcoming. People have already given financially (and I greatly appreciated), but we need to encourage this further, and we will all have the opportunity to continue this on September 26th. Item 4 is one we can now do once Al is home. The time of fellowship will be important for Al, as he will need to keep busy, and your participation is important.
Now is the time to put feet to the words. Many readers of this blog have visited Al, both at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Good Shepherd. Al has expressed appreciation of the visits, and I know he will greatly appreciate company during his time at home.

God Sees Our Value
"God does not see the same way people see. People look at the outside of a person, but the Lord looks at the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7. God is not done with Al. He is not done with each of us just yet. God looks at us through the eyes of a fther. He sees our blemishes, our defects, and our shortcomings. But God sees through all that like a diamond in the rough, and sees the jewel within, the potential for what we can be. Al's accident will continue to be used for God's glory, because He isn't done yet.
These last five weeks have been an incredible journey. One that I wouldn't trade for anything, except for the accident itself. Those of you that have been faithful in reading this blog have participated along side me. Those that are new, please read the journey from the begining, so you may rejoice along with us. God has been faithful in answering our prayers.
People from all acros the United States have been lifting Al up in prayer. There are several I know personally in California, Florida, North Carolina, Indiana, Ohio, New Jersey, Maine, Arkasas and Texas. The prayer chains have reached well beyond that, a friend telling several friends and so on. So I know that literally thousands of people have been praying for Al. Do not fool yourself into believeing that only those 'following' the blog are reading it, because I have been told otherwise.
The waiting is still the hardest. As we draw close to a time when the next chapter begins for Al, and each of us, let us be mindful that God is not done with us yet. The next chapter will hold new challenges, including home care for Al. I would ask that you pray what your role could be. I know that Kristen will be starting school soon, and will not be available 24/7. She is also working her part-time job at Panera. Consider alotting some time to sit with, talk with, and assist Al when he begins convalescing at home.

Sunday Visit
Sundays visit was a great time. Herb and I spent almost 2 hours with Al, laughing and joking around. We laughed until we cried! Al is almost back to his old self! God is amazing! The power of prayer is amazing and His miraculous works are evident with Al.
During our visit, we talked about everything from Herb preaching to finances. There are still some spots of shadows, but he has come a long way. There are rumors that he may be able to go home soon..... nothing has been confirmed yet, but do not be suprised when you see him at the benefit event!
I am attatching a photo to the blog I took with AL yesterday. We were supposed to go to the Gathering of the Tribes on Saturday together, and Obviously Al was not able to make it, but I brought him a shirt. So the picture is of Al and I, both wearing our matching shirts!

Al and His Telephone
Wednesday Kristen brought Al his telephone. When I arrived, he was still sleeping, but the aide woke him for dinner. It was funny to hear the aide, “Albert, you need to wake up….Albert.” Apparently he was very tired from the morning therapy and slept most of the day. I am thinking of calling him Albert now, and when I mentioned that to him, he made a face. Anyone that wakes up after being sound asleep would be a bit incoherent, I know I am if awakened like that.
Back to the telephone. When we told Al that his phone was there, he immediately wanted it, and tried to make a call. The phone did not work, and he became frustrated. I called Kristen to ask her about it, and she said it would be corrected the next day. This was not satisfactory to Al, and he became agitated over this. I told him it would all work out, and his frustration continued. I received another call which told me how to re-activate it, and I did that, telling Al that it would be an hour until it worked again. Every five minutes he continued to check it, and I told him, just wait and it will be fine. Now I am telling you this because sometimes things in life that we are used to be in control of, we are not. That can be frustrating. For Al, the telephone is one thing that he can control, and the level of frustration became elevated when he could not control it. We need to keep these things in mind as we visit with him.
As far as the dinner, he didn’t want any part of it. He kept saying, “This is just awful, I don’t want a thing!” Now Al has lost a considerable amount of weight, and I told him if he didn’t eat, he would end up half the man he used to be (Physically). To that he smiled.
Yesterday, Al’s phone was working because he called me. Some of you may also have gotten a telephone call now that Al can talk and has his phone. It continues to amaze me at the progress.

Today's Telephone Calls
When I looked at the phone as it rang, it told me Herb was calling me. The muffled voice on the other end said, "hi Mitch, how are you doing?" And it WAS NOT Herb! You imagine my suprise when I realized it was Al calling me. And to top it off, he was asaking how I was doing!!
I wasn't the only one that received a call today. Herb also got one earlier. Amazing!
God is amazing. Let this whole scenario sink in for a minute....... Now tell me how awesome and amazing God is. You just never know who will be calling you. Like I said in an earlier post, "look for something amazing this week." I just have to leave my office and go see him!!

Four Weeks Later
During my visit with Al today, he asked me for ice cream. Now that is a definate sign of improvement. I had to ask him to repeat it a few times, but I got the muffled message. I helped him with his lunch drinks, of which he had several. As far as the "potato salad" that was an entirely different story. After two small spoonfuls, it was totally rejected. It is understandable as the aide said "I think this used to be potato salad" refering to its' now almost liquid state. When the vanilla pudding came, he enjoyed that much better. Al still knows what is good and what is not.
Al is regaining his strength, and is very active. Even though he no longer needs his splint bandage on his right hand, he constantly is taking it off, then wanting it back on. The repairman inside is also coming out, as he wants to 'play' with the electronics of the bed. They should have driver lockout controls like they have for car power windows. That is how we all keep our kids from playing with the windows. He constantly wants to change the TV stations and turn it on and off. He even pulled the plug of the remote from the wall, then proceeded to get out of bed to plug it back in. When it didn't go in the fiorst time, I told him to turn it, which he did, then it plugged back in. While 'surfing' through the channels, I told him to punch in '78' to get the History channel, and he did!
As Al was fiddling with his helmet, it struck me that we should be putting some decals on it for him. I think some flames would be appropriate. Perhaps some of the t-shirt sayings are printed on stickers we could apply. I truly think he would get a charge out of that.
We continue to be amazed at Al's recovery. Why is that? Why do we become 'amazed' at what God can do? Perhaops our view of God is limited by our own perception of God. Perhaps we can only comprehend our own finite capacity. You see, God is limitless. Let that sink in a little. He has no limits. God is the one that controls the universe. Let that sink in a little. God is the creator of everything. More sinking in. When we expand our understanding of God, we can expand our expectations, and the amazing become exactly what God does. Amazing. Look for something amazing this week!

Perhaps we can only comprehend our own finite capacity. You see, God is limitless. Let that sink in a little. He has no limits. God is the one that controls the universe. Let that sink in a little. God is the creator of everything. More sinking in. When we expand our understanding of God, we can expand our expectations, and the amazing become exactly what God does. Amazing. Saturday Night Phone Call
The last thing on Kristen expected Saturday night was the telephone call from Al. No, I am not delusional, nor was Kristen. While some friends were visiting with Al, he sued their cell phone and made the call. Through the gruff whisper, the words "Hey Kiddo" came through. For those that don't know, this is the way always answered his cell phone when Kristen called. What an exhiliration!
This is one of those glimpses of light I discussed in Friday's post. Although the call lasted just a short time, Al remembered the number to dial, because the visitors did not know the number to make the call. You never know what suprises God has in store for us next. Be on the lookout.

Light and Shadows
Driving into my office today, a thought struck me as the light filtered through the trees, resembling a picket fence as I drove along. We have glimpses of light and shadows as we travel through this journey of life.
This relates to our brother Al’s recovery as well. We will see the glimpses of light and shadows during this recovery. In this early stage of the recovery, we can either be overly optimistic or easily become discouraged. It is difficult for us, as laymen, to fully understand this process. When we cut ourselves, we attend to it, and our body heals itself, usually in an amazing short time period, then it is forgotten. Al’s injury is not at all like that. I repeat, the waiting is the hardest thing.
As Kristen and I spoke this morning, comparing visits and discussing Al, we know that all the experiences will be totally individual. I am speaking about the roller coaster ride. I found an online book which has been personally helpful in understanding this injury, titled “The Traumatic Brain Injury Suvival Guide” by Dr. Glen Johnson a Clinical Neuropsychologist. Reading this can help everyone understand what is going on. This can be found at: http://www.tbiguide.com/
Now, I must state that I am not saying that everything found within it relates to Al, but Kristen and I believe that education is an important avenue in understanding his recovery. We continue to encourage visitation, but it does need to be kept to a minimum due to over-stimulation (read book). When you visit, try to keep it brief (read book). Try to follow some of the guidelines in the book. This is all in helping Al to heal.

Good Shepherd Info
Al is now at his latest abode at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitaion building, Room 404B. Kristen went with Al as he got settled in yesterday afternoon. He has one roomate, which is a welcomed change from three. Visiting hours are from 11am - 8pm daily.
A new chapter is evolving, one that can only be credited to the power of prayer and God's faithfulness. As I read in Psalms 37:4 "Enjoy serving the Lord, and He will give you what you want." Now this is not a sugar daddy verse, as you can see a major prerequisite...."Enjoy serving the Lord..." As we meld our desires to God's plan, he blesses it. As Al has been serving within the will of God, I am sure He is well pleased to give Al this desire, "I want to be out of here." This statement was expressed to Kristen by Al in whipser one day last week, and now the new chapter begins.

A Moving Target?
Al will be moving to Good Shepherd for rehabilitation today. The address is 850 S 5th St. Allentown, PA 18103-3295, (610) 776-3299. Kristen is, as I write this post, filling out the necessary paperwork for the transfer. Once we have additional information as to the exact location, room number and visiting hours, it will be posted here. Al will be undergoing three hours of rehab each day. I think this will expend some of the energies he has been exhibiting this past week.
Retrospectively, this past week has been a roller coaster with today working toward the summit. It is amazing how God is working. Al has been eating some, he spent several hours sitting up in a chair the other day. He is exhibiting frustrations, which would be trypical for Al (or for any of us in the same situation) when restricted. Trusting in God.....the only way to proceed!

I have restrained myself from commenting on the helmet issue. Although a personal choice in the state of Pennsylvania, it is my opinion is that you should wear one when riding. I have seen all kinds of apparel on the road (and many that are lacking).
Yesterday I noticed three riders on sport bikes, wearing shorts, sneakers (one had on sandals) t-shirts and sunglasses, no helmets. As they were speeding along, noticibly enjoying themeelves by swerving in and out of traffic, popping wheelies while travling at a high rate of speed, I wondered what I would do if they crashed into me, or worse, someone else. Driving a larger SUV, I believe I would fair much better in the crash than any of them. I know for sure that my body would have been better protected.
When I ride, a helmet is on my head. I wear protective foot wear. Having ridden over 8000 miles so far this riding season, I have been very fortunate. It is not worth the risk. Things seem to happen much faster on a bike.
I mentioned at the Prayer Service for Pastor Al that there are two kinds of riders. Those that have gone down, and those that will. For those of us that have gone down, we understand the dynamics of what happens. Most can remember, either saying out loud, or at least thinking, "this is going to hurt." In my case Deb can attest to the vocal rendition of that statement. I have said many times that based upon my accident in 2003, I would not be here making this post had I not been wearing a helmet. I keep the helmet as a reminder, and it shows the scuff marks of the asphalt pavent on the left side and rear. I can only imagine what my head would have looked like without it.

As I mentioned in the begining of this post, it is your choice. As far as the three I saw yesterday, I would stop if needed to help, because of God's compassion in my heart. It has nothing to do with their choice.

The progress in the past few days has been incredible. Yesterday, they had Al sitting up in a chair for about 5 hours. He also had his first meal, peaches, mashed potatoes, meat......all pureed, so he wasn't too keen on the meat part. All this with no major issues. He is that much closer to a steak dinner!
Today it is planned to get him up and to try walking. When they put him in the chair yesterday, he needed alot of assistance. Knowing Al as I do, I am sure he is very frustrated with being in the hospital. I can imagine, as someone that likes, and has been in control, he doesn't like all the restrictions, and others telling him what to be doing all the time.
This is how it is with each of us. We like being in control. We like calling the shots. But God wants us to put our FULL trust in Him. This means TOTAL reliance on Him. This means He calls the shots. WOW. This is a difficult thing...this relinquishment of our control. Think about what Al's situation can be teaching us. Ultimately, we are NOT in control, and need to surrender.

He Speaks!
"Turn Off The Fan!" His first words in almost three weeks, echoing his frustrations. These words and a few more more were expressed during Kristen's visit today. He also expressed that he is tired of being "here" meaning in the hospital. The plan is to get him up tomorrow, with the help of Physical Therapy. We are greatly encouraged by what God is doing through this!
